How to Extend Wifi Range in Your Home

If you’re having trouble getting a good single from your wifi at home. Then, here are a few things you can do that might help.

Using an ethernet cable is the fastest way to extend your wifi. However, if you are unable to use ethernet, there are many other ways such as wifi extenders, repeaters, and wifi mesh networks. These will all help extend your wifi range, and even strengthen it.

What Is The Difference Between Wifi Extenders and Repeaters?

Wifi repeater

Although both a wifi extender and repeater are used to strengthen your wifi range. They are actually two different things, and I will help you choose the best one for your situation. The difference between a wifi extender and a repeater is that the extender extends the range of your wifi signal and the repeater repeats the signal with its own connection.

So, which one is better? Typically a wifi extender is better because it is connected via ethernet cable, which keeps the strength of your wifi the same and extends the signal. Also, if you decide to buy a new router, but the signal still doesn’t reach you can use your old router as a high end wifi extender. This can be very useful and save you the money of buying a new extender.

On the other hand, a wifi repeater finds your wifi signal and repeats its own signal that then connects to your wifi. That means you will have two different signals in your home. Also, if a wifi repeater is set up in a place with a weak signal, it will also give out a weak signal. Therefore, your wifi range will be extended, but it will also be very weak.

What Effects Your Wifi Range?

There are many factors that can affect the range of your wifi signal. This can range from your floors and walls, appliances, and even your neighbor’s wifi can interfere with yours. It is very important to figure out what the problem is before you decide to purchase something expensive like a new router, or even a new wifi plan.

Walls and Floors: Wifi is different radio wave frequencies, and if physical objects like walls and floors can block the path of your wifi signal. Depending on what your walls are made out of can determine how weak your wifi gets. This is because more solid materials such as metal can block your wifi signal easier than materials such as wood. Therefore, it is very important to move your router to an area that doesn’t have very many walls or metal objects blocking it. It is recommended to set your router up in the middle of your house because that way it will have an equal amount of walls to get through. Rather than going through all your walls to reach the other side of your house.

Appliances: Believe it or not, but appliances like your microwave can interfere with your wifi signal. This is because your microwave uses wave frequencies just like wifi does. Then again most microwaves have a higher frequency that will most likely not interfere with your signal. What you should be more careful of are things like baby monitors, Bluetooth devices like speakers, etc. Some of these things will share the same or similar frequencies as your wifi so, make sure to turn them off when they are not being used.

Other Wifi: Your neighbors’ wifi network might be using the same signal as yours. There are many free applications out there that allow you to check to see if your router is sharing the same signal with other routers in your area. This is a very easy, free, and quick change to make, and could be the issue why you aren’t getting a good wifi connection.

Buy a New Wifi Router

Another solution might be to buy a new router. A router is the same as any piece of technology because it will eventually go out of date and you will need a new one. Therefore, a new wifi router might be the best option to extend the range of your wifi in your home. You should also keep in mind that like computers, your router needs to update its software, and out of date software can be buggy or slow. This can cause your wifi signal to be weak and can be fixed by a basic update.

Also, you should note that the router your service provider provided you with, really isn’t the best router, and can affect the range of your wifi. Many people think your service provider won’t allow you to use a custom router, but this is just not true. Spending around $100 for a custom router can extend the range of your wifi, and provide certain features to improve the strength of your wifi that your providers’ router doesn’t offer.

When looking for a new router some things to keep in mind are QoS which means the quality of service. Basically, this prioritizes programs and gives more bandwidth to more important things you are doing. This feature is great for gamers who want to prioritize the strong signal for games so they don’t lag out.

You should also keep in mind the antennas of the router. Some routers have omnidirectional antennas that spread the signal out evenly. While others have multiple antennas that shoot the wifi signal out in a specific direction. This is great for people who can’t get a connection in certain areas of their homes.

How to Setup a Wifi Mesh Network

Speaking of routers, setting up a wifi mesh network is great for big homes and workplaces. This will keep your signal at the optimum strength all over your home. A wifi mesh network consists of a main router that is connected to your modem and multiple nodes. The nodes are controlled by the main router.  You can use other routers as nodes as long as you connect them to your main router during setup.

Wifi node for mesh network

Every node and router used in a mesh network connects to each other to communicate, as well as all your devices. You can walk around your house with a handheld device and your routers will figure out the best node to connect to without disconnecting and changing your network. This is unlike repeaters and extenders, which create a new connection that you have to connect from when you are in range.

Essentially, a mesh network is used to create many different wifi signals inside your home, instead of just extending it or transforming it into something else. This keeps the signal very strong and reliable.

5.0GHz vs 2.4GHz

When you are connecting to your wifi, most routers nowadays have two different frequencies to choose from. These two frequencies are 5.0GHz and 2.4GHz.

The 5.0GHz is a higher frequency that gives a faster signal to devices that are near it. This is because the higher the frequency is the closer the wavelengths are together the faster it is, but it doesn’t have as much range because the signal can be interrupted by more things.

As for the 2.4GHz frequency, gives your wifi a longer range, but it is also a little slower. This is because the wavelengths are slower but longer.

Think of this as running. You can run your fastest for a short amount of time until you get tired. However, if you run slower you can run further for a longer amount of time. This is the same with these two wifi frequencies.

In order to extend the range of your wifi and boost the signal. It is best to figure why you are not getting a good signal first before you decide to spend your money on something expensive. All in all, these are all really good solutions and should help improve the signal of your wifi by a good amount. Make sure your hardware is up to date, and your router is in the optimal position, this will give you a basis of what to do.

I first got into building my own computer when I was around 12 or 13. The first computer I had ever built didn't work. So I kept researching to figure what I did wrong. I really enjoyed researching, learning, and building computers, so I decided to turn it into an online business, and here I am.
