Are Dual Monitors Worth it? Benefits of a Dual Monitor Setup

After gaming with a single monitor for all my life a couple of months ago, I decided to buy a second monitor, and after just a few days I was already enjoying the benefits.

Buying a dual monitor can save you a lot of time and it is recommended by many pc enthusiasts. Having access to a second monitor provides a lot of benefits that can help you be more productive, and can just make your life that much easier. So, here are 5 benefits of having a second monitor.

What are the benefits of a second monitor?

1. Dual Monitors Can Increase Productivity by 42%

A study done by Jon Peddie surveyed over 1,000 different people in the years 2002, 2012, and in 2017. Showing that they gained a 42% increase in productivity due to having a second monitor. You should keep in mind that the effectiveness of a dual monitor will vary depending on how often you use your computer and what you use your computer for.

Someone who uses their computer for everyday tasks or school may only see a small increase in productivity with a second monitor. Even if you’re someone like this, I would still highly recommend buying a second monitor if you can because it won’t just save you time, but it is also very convenient to have, and you will find certain tasks are easier to do with a dual monitor setup.

If you are a person who uses a computer for multiple hours a day whether it’s just for fun or for work. Then you will see the biggest productivity increase.

For example, a computer programmer can benefit greatly from having two monitors, by being able to have their code in the main monitor and whatever they are testing in the second monitor. This will allow them to write and test their code at the same time, which will allow them to be more productive and finish their project faster.

If you find yourself moving between tabs or windows constantly, having two monitors will save you a lot of time because you can set up those extra tabs and applications in your second monitor. That way you will only have to move your head to the second screen instead of pressing buttons to move your windows around, which can make your screen very messy and unorganized.

2. Compare Multiple Images and Products Side by Side

With a single monitor comparing products or deciding between two images can be a hassle. You’re probably used to tabbing in and out when switching between products, or comparing two images distorted in two different windows next to each other, but with a second monitor, you will be able to do these tasks more effectively.

When I only had one monitor I would find myself writing down the specs of a product I wanted. That way I could compare it to another product in real-time, but when I made the switch to a second monitor I was able to compare multiple products side by side in a matter of seconds.

You get the same benefit with images and videos. For many jobs that involve testing and comparing multiple images, videos, etc you will greatly benefit from the use of two monitors. This is because you will be able to pull up these images side by side in a full resolution. This will allow you to see and point out any flaws you may not have seen with only one monitor.

3. Can Save You Around $100-$200

If you are looking for some more screen real estate in your setup, buying a second monitor can save you some money. If you want more screen space for your computer, then you really only have two options. These options are a second monitor or an ultrawide monitor. if you want to know the difference and comparisons I wrote a detailed explanation comparing the two.

The prices of both an ultrawide monitor and a single monitor can vary depending on the performance of each monitor. You will most likely see that in each performance range, the prices of ultrawide monitors are more than double the price of a single monitor screen. Knowing this you can purchase two monitors for less than the price of an ultrawide monitor.

For people who want high performance gaming monitors. Spending your money on a 144Hz monitor for your main screen and dropping down to a 60Hz monitor for your second screen will save you a lot of money compared to buying a single 144Hz ultrawide screen.

Another way you can save money with a dual monitor setup is by using your old monitor as your second monitor that way you only have to spend your money on a single monitor screen.

Keep in mind that these are the cheapest monitors I could find and monitors with these specs will change in price depending on which brand monitor you get.

4. Improves Communication

Having two monitors can be very beneficial when working or gaming from home. Being able to read emails or messages from your friends on your second monitor. While you play games or work on a project on your first monitor.

You will be able to focus on the task at hand without constantly checking in or worrying about when you’re getting that next text message or email from your co-worker.

Having two monitors is also great for video calls from school or work, allowing you to communicate and stay in touch. While playing your favorite video game at the same time.

5. Helps With Video and Photo Editing

For people who use a lot of video and photo editing software, it can be very painful when your screen is a mess and very unorganized. Having all sorts of editing tools and windows filling up your screen, or having to tab in and out to watch that clip or find that photo will cause you to become very unorganized and it might even mess up your work.

Having the ability to organize your video editing software on your first screen and all your extra stuff on the second screen create an easy and efficient way to edit your photos and videos.

I first got into building my own computer when I was around 12 or 13. The first computer I had ever built didn't work. So I kept researching to figure what I did wrong. I really enjoyed researching, learning, and building computers, so I decided to turn it into an online business, and here I am.
